About the Collection
Leoš Janáček crossed beyond the threshold of traditional thinking and established tropes and found his inimitable musical expression. In putting together this collection, we were inspired by his approach and created a unique collection of watches with the royalty watchmaking complications – a tourbillon, which we are offering for the first time in the Czech Republic in a women’s design. The music of Leoš Janáček has accompanied us for more than 100 years, and thanks to its originality, it still communicates directly with us today. To bring us closer to the music, our collection combines a timeless design with human creativity and the cutting-edge materials that Leoš Janáček’s region offers us.
Technology
The royalty of watchmaking complications is the tourbillon. This is a mechanism that compensates for the influence of gravity on the accuracy of watch movements. It is a mechanical anchor mechanism, located inside a movable platform with centralized inertia, which rotates around its own axis once a minute, thereby providing a change in the position of the flywheel relative to the Earth’s core.
This is one of the “high” clockwork complications of so-called Haute Horlogerie. It was invented by A.L. Breguet in 1795. Tourbillon watches are only offered by high-quality watch brands, and are indicative of the brand’s standards.
Leoš Janáček
Leoš Janáček, born in Hukvaldy in the Frýdek-Místek district, is a Czech composer today renowned throughout the world. The composer, whose work forms one of the pillars of modern music, came from a modest teacher’s family. He studied in Brno, Prague, Leipzig and Vienna. He his professional life is synonymous with Brno, where he worked as a director of the organ school. He later taught at the conservatory in Brno and Prague. His work emerged out of Moravian folklore, which he admired and had a detailed knowledge of.
Janáček wrote nine operas, the most famous of which is Jenůfa (1903), based on a play by Gabriela Preissová. The opera, which the National Theatre in Prague originally refused to produce, was successful in Vienna, Germany and New York. Other operas of Janáček include The Cunning Little Vixen, Káťa Kabanová, and the Makropoulos Affair. Janáček’s world-renown was also secured by the cantata The Diary of One Who Disappeared and his Glagolitic Mass, sung in Old Slavonic.
Support
We regularly support the Janacek May International Music Festival, which is devoted mainly to classical music, but also incorporates jazz, the spoken word and dance. The dramaturgy of the festival focuses primarily on the music of Leoš Janáček and has born his name since 1976. This Moravian musical gem sparkles brighter with every passing year and – thanks to its many fine and precise cuts, layered over the years, combined with the essential professional care it receives – it has grown to be an inimitable event with a unique character.
With its concerts, the festival always visits Ostrava and other cities of the Moravian-Silesian Region to enthral and enrich the audience as much as possible with interpretations by world-class performers and the quality of the programme offered. After all, the festival is a place where Czech, European, and World’s leading musicians meet to perform the best of four centuries of music.
